HARTLAND ROAD EXTERIOR

The property on Hartland Road in the heart of leafy Epping is a detached Victorian house with a large garden.

The house was fully refurbished, reconfigured and extended and a new swimming pool was created to the back of the garden.

The main glass extension projects into the garden with generous tall sliding doors inviting abundant natural light and a wide access to the garden.

The structural glass meets the terrace floor without interruption, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The sedum roof further enhances the property’s connection to nature and biodiversity.

Copper cladding of the rear elevation was used to address the disparity of existing small extensions. The bronze finish creates an aesthetic that harmonises large and small volumes, old and new constructions. The matt finish and brown colour reach to the warmth of the Victorian brickwork.

Although copper is a traditional material, we opted for a mixed approach by using the classic standing seam technique to connect the sheets in a repetitive pattern with sharp junctions, merging old techniques with a modern look. This innovative application not only serves as a protective barrier but also delivers essential insulation and ventilation to the building. Copper is a fully recyclabe material.

External surfaces were greatly researched: the brickwork of the terrace floor was selected among a large quantity of options; its size, style and pattern are in continuity with the indoor encaustic floor tile. The render of the new terrace wall and pool house were decorated with limewash paint; this was chosen to give a matt and textured background with a rich palette of colours.

The swimming pool tiles were handmade creating a unique shimmering effect between the water and the reflection of its surround. The curved neck massage water pipe was purposly designed and manufactured in solid natural brass; this water feature brings a sense of wellbeing and calm to the general use the pool.
